Inhumanity #1 Post Game (No spoilers)
A pretty excellent first issue, but one that left me a good deal upset. The art by Olivier Coipel with Dustin Weaver and Leinil Yu, is fantastic… and the writing is pretty great as well (those of you concerned that Matt Fraction only excels at scripting whimsical tales should have your worries well put to rest).
The issues is a bit low on action. There is a lot of set up needed and the reader is given a refresher course on the history of the Inhumans as well as much of what has occurred in the Infinity event. Yet the pacing is fast and Fraction does a good job of succinctly destiling the complex and often retconned backstory of the Inhumans’ origins.
Of course none of this is what upset me about the issue - and those of you who have read it already likely know exactly what I’m talking about. A certain character much beloved to me is showcased. The characterization starts off wonderfully before devolving into odd histrionics and culminating in a rash, shocking act. And it was this that so caused my stomach to drop.
Admittedly I’m biased… The Inhuman Royals are my favorites and naturally I only want good things for them. There can’t be too much adventure and excitement without peril, so I’m just going to have to soldier through seeing my favorites endure such dire and distressing circumstances.
While not a ‘fun’ issue, Inhumanity #1 was certainly exciting and interesting and left me wanting more.
I’m with ya. It was an interesting read, and a true WTF - I just hope it serves some story purpose down the road.
